About
Olivier J.LW is a multidisciplinary artist and musician, born in Western Europe in the early 1980s and currently residing in the south of France. His creative journey began in early childhood, captivated by the intricate beauty of nature, zoology, and botany. As he grew, his curiosity expanded, delving into the realms of science fiction and abstract expression, seeking to understand the unseen through both visual and sonic means. In parallel, music entered his life during his adolescence, with a particular affinity for raw, underground, and rebellious sounds. At the age of 16, having moved to Belgium, he formed a band that still exists today — a project that has taken him on international tours and allowed him to share his musical vision with audiences across the Americas and beyond.
In his visual practice, Olivier’s work is a deep exploration of both personal and metaphysical themes. One series is an intimate reflection on his story as an adoptee, where he uses expressive, figurative forms inspired by Expressionism and Surrealism to explore the unknowns of his origins. These paintings delve into the complex relationship between identity, biological genesis, and the mysteries of the self, bringing the viewer face to face with questions that lie beyond the surface.
Another series takes on the enigmatic realm of dreams, where Olivier explores the biological and chemical processes of the body during sleep. Using imagery of veins, blood flow, and bodily chemistry, he attempts to render the invisible aspects of our subconscious life. The work is an invitation to reflect on the often mysterious and ephemeral nature of dreams — a territory that lies at the intersection of the known and the unknowable.
A third series delves into the spiritual world, focusing on what we commonly refer to as "ghosts." Through this work, Olivier portrays the dissolution of these spectral figures from the spiritual world, drawing a parallel to the disintegration of their physical forms from our tangible reality. The work explores the delicate transition between life and death, capturing the slow, inevitable fading of these spirits as they return to the ether from which they came.
Musically, Olivier’s approach mirrors his visual practice: rich, layered, and textured. With a keen interest in sound design, he has amassed a collection of guitars, effect pedals and synthesizers, each adding a unique character to his compositions. His process begins with a pulse — a rhythm, a groove, or a feeling — which unfurls into intricate melodies and harmonies that reflect his inner landscape.
Olivier’s career has been marked by significant achievements, including performances at renowned festivals, international tours, and exhibitions in key galleries in Belgium. Now based in France, he shares a gallery space with two other artists, a space that serves both as a studio and an exhibition venue where visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the evolving world of his work. Looking to the future, Olivier remains steadfast in his vision: to stay deeply connected to the act of creation, welcoming new themes and ideas as they emerge — whether from the depths of the subconscious or the currents of the collective consciousness. His commitment to his craft continues with the same unyielding passion that has fueled his artistic journey from its very beginning.
